The 16th Canberra Short Film Festival is here!

Hi there filmmakers, schools, studios and loyal viewers

We are here to tell you that the 16th Annual Canberra Short Film Festival (CSFF) is well and truly off and running after the shortlists for this year have finally been announced. These outstanding entries will be enjoyed by the public over one long weekend from the 16th – 18th of September 2011 in the heart of Australia’s capital, Canberra.

The CSFF is a nation-wide competition that brings together the very best that Australian short film has to offer. It celebrates the uniqueness of our culture and the often unknown strength of the nation’s filmmaking talents. This competition aims to encourage the beauty of Australia’s diversity as well as the creativity of a range of filmmakers, from school students to emerging artists to industry professionals.

After some much needed changes to the entry program in 2011, the CSFF for this year now has a fresh look that will only hope to encourage our growth towards the future. The entry categories for 2011 were as follows:

NATIONAL SCHOOLS COMPETITION – This category is open to any student enrolled in school up to year 12, no matter what their filmmaking experience may be. This category excludes tertiary institutions such as TAFE, university or film schools.

GRASS-ROOTS COMPETITION – This category is for all the filmmaking enthusiasts who are just starting out and whose experience is yet to reach that of their passion for this art. This may include people who are undertaking tertiary studies, or just hobbyists. These entries have to have less than four years experience in the production industry.

EMERGING COMPETITION – This category is aimed at filmmakers with a bit more solid experience (which includes related tertiary study). At least four years or more would place you in this category, yet these filmmakers should not have gained a substantial amount of their income from this profession in the last 12 months.

PRACTICING COMPETITION – This category is for those who regularly work in the film production industry so would have the assistance of production companies and/or industry contacts to help them with their film. More than four years experience is required (including related tertiary studies) as well as regular employment in the production industry over the last 12 months.

By re-designing the competition categories, filmmakers are given a fairer advantage in the judging process, as they are matched against other entrants whose filmmaking experience more closely resembles their own.

The prizes on offer this year are:
$750 cash for the NATIONAL SCHOOLS winner
$1000 cash for the GRASS-ROOTS winner
$1500 cash for the EMERGING winner
$1750 cash for the PRACTISING winner

People’s choice awards are also given out in each category.

We are very excited to be presenting such an original and creative list of films this year and look forward to entertaining audience members who finally get to emerge from the confines of the chilly Canberra winter to a fresh and vibrant beginning to their spring season! The shortlisted films with be shown in Canberra City’s Dendy Cinemas.
